Rain Or Shine In July

Well we ended June and started July off with a bang. All throughout June we've had a great snook bite in the lagoon. Recently there was a sewage spill into Turkey Creek which resulted in millions of gallons of raw sewage being dumped into the lagoon. It didn't seem to effect anything at first but now the water is super dirty and the snook bite has slowed down in the lagoon. Our live baits like pinfish, pigfish, and croakers start to die very shortly after filling the live-well with the river water. On the other hand there are baits like pogies, mullet, and threadfins flourishing all throughout the lagoon with no problem. We've also had quite a bit of rain in the last week so that has also been contributing to the dirty water in the lagoon.
Moving on down, the inlet has had some days with very clean ocean water coming in, making the inlet crystal clear on an incoming tide. The snook bite has also been really hot too. Yesterdays trip, July 2nd, we landed 18 snook within about 3 hours and not to mention a few break offs in the mix. Hopefully we can get that nasty river water flushed out soon.
Offshore fishing has been pretty successful as well. We've been hitting a bunch of the closer reefs lately. Most of these natural reefs are only about 7 to 9 miles out in the 50 ft to 60 ft areas. We're getting snapper, triggerfish, cobia, mahi, kingfish, and a bunch of other stuff that keeps the action flowing consistently. We are having our typical afternoon storms so getting out early and back before getting caught in one of these storms is key. They did release our 2025 Red Snapper dates for July 11th and 12th but unfortunately Captain Shane will be on a cruise that weekend, relaxing for a change. When I get back it will be back to the grind with drag screaming action and smelling like fish.
