Excellent Weekend Offshore
Cobia fishing was excellent this weekend. On both days, we reached our 2 fish per vessel limit with some impressive-sized keepers. Typically, during the summer and early fall, we experience a strong run of cobia following the sharks offshore. At this time of year, if you spot a large shark, there's likely at least one cobia nearby. This past weekend, we observed big bull sharks swimming beneath the boat, accompanied by schools of cobia (20 to 30 fish) around them. We caught the cobia using live mullet and pinfish on the surface, and also on bottom rigs with squid and frozen sardines. Many offshore fishermen find the shark population frustrating these days, but the sharks do bring company. While having sharks around isn't ideal for snapper and grouper fishing, cobia fishing tends to be quite good. Surprisingly, these sharks weren't too aggressive towards our catch, allowing for multiple hookups and plenty of action. This left my clients with tired arms and big smiles.
